Just as a note the Civ 5 Series won't be starting for about a week maybe less.Until I can get the hang of A new kind of series anyway.

Horror and my thoughts on it

Well it's Halloween and....I forgot to plan anything for it.....well....crap.And it sucks too cause halloween is one of my favorite days of the year.Just everything about it makes me smile.The horror movie marathons,the horror emphasis and well.....many other horror elements.Can you see why I love the Resident Evil games? I LOVE HORROR! But really what is horror.Is it slasher movies with gore or intense and slow to build ghost movies liek paranormal activity? To me it's moreso the latter but I don't dismiss the former as just mindless viloence either.

There is a certain sense of fun and an odd sense of satisfaction watching the manipulative psychiatrist in Friday the 13th part 7 get weedwhacked in the sternum.It's oddly therapeutic watching someone being a massive jerk only to get slaughtered near the end of it.Yeah it's predictable as hell but at the same time it's satisfying.But not scary.Maybe nightmare on elm street....the first one.....but past that most common slasher flicks are predictable as hell especially the 80's ones with the closest things these days being the saw movies.I've never seen a saw movie but I've seen clips and whatnot and know the general concept and it seems okay in terms of concept and plot but really it Involves alot of slaughter and it's very close to the older movies like friday the 13th sans one important thing.The joy of seeing a cliche douchebag get thrown into a combine.

 

 

To me the older movies were about fun and when you take just the gore side of it and not the satisfaction and cheese it just makes it uncomfortable and preechy.It takes the fun out of the idea to me.Slasher movies are to me meant to be cheesy and fun and when you try to give it a more serious mood and try to make the gore an unsettling factor instead of part of the cheese it ceases to be fun and starts being just a guy saying "Look that guy has his guts hanging out.Scary huh?"What I'm trying to say is out of all the styles of horror I just don't get gross out or gore horror on it's own.

Not that gross out humor can't be done well.

 

 

Having disturbing images meant to unsettle people can work but it has to be something way out there.Simpel gore can't do it at least not to me.Now John Carpenter's"The thing" is the way to do gross out right.Give a good atomosphere of horror and keep the focus on it while providing unsettling images.The first time I saw the thing I vomited out of sheer intensity of the mutations the thing went through and seeing a human head grow legs and arms and spikes in gory detail is genius.The name of the game is abstract.Now it has limits but the thing is a work of art and I suggest any readers watch it.Not the prequel a few years ago I hear that's crap.So slashers are fun if not scary,and for the most part unless abstract while making sense gore just doesn't jive with me.What about the aforementioned Paranormal activity style?

I call it that because I can't think of a proper name by the way.

 

This style focusing on reality and alot of them using the "Found footage style" made popular from the blair witch project can either be genius like blair witch,and paranormal activity one( and from what I hear 2 and 3 while four seems pretty crap) or it can be massive failure like the movie quarantine(Which by the way if you haven't seen the spoony one's vlog review of that go watch it now it's hilarious).It's very hit or miss to say the least.The main issue with them being a focus on reality and if you aren't careful you get alot of very stupid characters and bad plot decisions.Not to mention if it is found footage things can easily go very awry with how it's found and edited or why it's being shot in the first place.Alot of people found mica in the first paranormal activity really obnoxious and unrealistic because he wouldn't stop filming to the point of pissing his wife right the hell off.I personally have no real issue since I think it's addressed well myself but it can be a problem.

 

 

But when PA(paranormal activity for short) style horror is good it's amazing.Look up a scene from The first PA involving a ouiji board and it's a genius scene.It has both the actual horror and pretty good horror but I gotta say when I first saw the end part of it I was giddy.It was such a cool horror moment and so clever it's one of if not my favorite moments in horror.Seriously look it up on youtube.

 

But really that's all I can think of for this little rant.It's just something I thought of for halloween since I've been distracted lately.Horror is capable of great good and great fail in the right or wrong hands.Like I said I personally reccomend Paranormal activity 1 or The original john carpenters thing.or for the more slasher fan the nightmare on elm street movies or my favorite in the Friday the 13th series part 7.(It has been a while so I may need to rewatch for a clearer opinion) that being said have a happy halloween everyone and expect a review of borderlands 2....soonish

When Black and white 2 were announced I was very skeptical since it really didn't seem very different from the original two games and at the time I stand by that however it did change quite a bit and considering it's being considered as one of the best games in the series I do owe it an apology however....

 

 

 

 

What the hell did they do to elesa?! Seriously her design in this game is terrible compared to the original and do not get me started on sabrina being an actor in the poke star studios and having her terrible design from HGSS.

Did the lead designer of pokemon just lose his mind or is he just being insanely blunt now? You decide!!

So first we had nobunaga's ambition Which I'm really confused and kinda conflicted on I like the gameplay side but the idea of putting pokemon in the ancient japanese period is just weird to me.Like no purpose weird since they have they're own universe and could do a serious story there but this strikes me as really off.

Okay I love the pokemon franchise but I wanna say this now.They do repeat the same game essentially every generation with minor differences with the team that's trying to take over the world but this?.....this feels wrong to me.Like again I'll probably get white 2 but sequalizing both versions feels so wrong to me.pretty much saying fuck it now we're just remaking the game literally right after we made it.Again It'll be good but just a weird decision to me

The Top 8 gym leaders in pokemon

Yes You are reading that correctly and yes I am that big of a nerd.But think about it.The pokemon games revolve around the gym leaders and while I do admit the games themselves can be repetitive as hell they're still seriously fun rpg's.But think about it.Alot of the intrigue with these games is the gym leaders.What they act like? What they look like? What type they use? and what their gym's gimmick is? really I think that the series owes alot to them and I'll counting down my top 8(Seems appropriate) and we get started off with one of the newest

Number 8 Elesa

Ah elesa.I don't know too much about her since I haven't gotten to the 5th gen yet not because I don't want to but my ds crapped out.But nonetheless I do love her design and her team is while repetitive using two emolga for gods sake,zebstrika on the other hand is a pretty damn good signature pokemon.I don't know too much of her gym though since again not familiar with gen 5 but on the other hand her personality and her expression makes her pretty cool.She's also a model which again adds to a very unique personality for her.In my opinion one of the cooler gym leaders

Number 7 Falkner

As yes falkner the first non rock gym leader.and considering how weird the 5th gen one is I count him as the only non rock normal gym leader up front.I do like the idea of flying type gym leaders since I think flying as a type is underappreciated and I do really like falkners design...however....his signature is pidgeotto......terrible stats in final form and it's not even a new gen pokemon.WHAT THE HELL?!

Number 6 Flannery

Ah The Newest gymleader at the time.Her schtick was that she was newly appointed as a gym leader that plus the fact that she has a gym inside of a sauna makes her stand out quite a bit I think.A very disticnt design makes her a pretty cool gym leader however much like falkner she has one big fault.Her signature.Torkoal is just not that distinct I keep thinking her signature is camerupt but go figure it's torkoal.Eh nonethelss a good design

Number 5 Jasmine



okay here's where I get embarrassed.when I was a kid I had a huge crush on jasmine.She's just cute though that's not why she's here(Though not hurting)  she's the first gym leader to use one of the new types at the time and while she doesn't look it her signature pokemon was pretty threatening at the time.Steelix and evolution of one of the bigger pokemon in the previous gen so between those two alone and her unique story bit with the lighthouse make her really memorable.

Number 4 Juan

Some people may not even know who juan is but in my favorite pokemon game emerald version he replaces wally as the water gym leader and while his gym is the same as wally's his team is much different.While wally's signature is milotic juan has a frakking kingdra and that makes his fight alot harder when comparing the two 8th gym's alone.plus he's spanish that's awesome

Number 3 Gardenia

I'm not sure what it is but something about her really stands out to me.maybe it's the unique design maybe it;s the fact that she's the second gym leader and her signature is a damn roserade a third stager.But in all honesty It's probably the anime version and this is one of the few cases where this is best version of the character cause she is a damn blast to watch.She's insane and I think my pic from the update says it all

Number 2 Blaine

Ah Blaine.One of my favorite gym leaders.He's just a classic really I mean the first gym leader after the silph co incident and the quiz gimmick just makes him so cool to me.not to mention his signature is rapidash who I am a big fan of as a fire type pokemon though haven't used much for some reason.nonetheless Blaine stands out massivly against alot of trainers for his unique personality which shines in alot of aspects of him

Number 1 Sabrina

Goddammit this ladies and gentlemen is one of the very few times I preferred a gym leader in the anime to the games.Why? well in the anime That picture happened and made me crap myself as a kid.I mean my god she was the best part of the entire series.Hell her design in the anime and the similar designs in the games were great but.....her design in the newest game heart gold and soul silver makes her look....well

I hate this design.She doesn't look unique or threatening like she used to now she looks like a non descript basic trainer it's pathetic.I always think of her as the dark and threatening psychic trainer from the anime.worthy of having a goddamn alakazam in her party.Nuff said

So anyone else notice this?......again

Well I can't make a screenshot of a ps3 game and it's tricky to do something with an emulator but I will say I have been playing oblivion and sonic generations and I highly reccomend both of them
